Charity Background and Annual Reports
MEAction UK is a network of people with ME fighting for health equality for ME by building community and mobilising people with ME, families, and allies. #MEAction UK was established in 2017, followed by #MEAction Scotland in 2018 with the belief that while we may find it difficult to advocate for ourselves in the physical world, by making our activism accessible, we can be an unstoppable force. MEAction UK was established as a UK charity in 2023.
The mission of MEAction UK is to build a grassroots movement of people with ME, families, and allies that leverages the power of technology and community to fight for research funding, healthcare education, and public awareness for ME. Our vision is to create a world where all people with ME have support and access to compassionate and effective care.
The MEAction UK trustees are responsible for all the actions we undertake and work with the volunteer teams to ensure our work is firmly based in grassroots activities.
We have seven key areas of activity in the UK:
Parliament: galvanising support from MPs and MSPs to influence the Westminster and Holyrood governments and publicly funded organisations.
National Institute for Clinical Excellence: we campaigned to get the NICE guideline on ME/CFS reviewed and engaged as official stakeholders in the consultation process to update the guideline.
Awareness and public understanding: using social media and our online presence to raise awareness of the debilitating impact of ME.
#Millions Missing: coordinating annual awareness raising events across the UK, including successfully moving from in-person to virtual events during Covid-19.
Professional Development of Healthcare Workers working with other charities we promote relevant training modules to healthcare professionals and have got agreement for the development of an ME module for GPs in Scotland.
Building Community: using social media, including Facebook groups, we have provided support for people with ME and information and advice for those wishing to volunteer with #MEAction UK.
Promoting Research: raising awareness of the need for research into the cause of ME and potential treatments/cures by encouraging people with ME to contact research funders and promoting the results of research.
